Ashleigh Barty is pushed hard by Carla Suarez Navarro

World number one Ashleigh Barty had to work hard before they sealed a triumphant return to the turf with their victory over Carla Suarez Navarro.

The top seed fought 6-1 6-7 (1) 6-1 against an opponent who last played Wimbledon after recently recovering from Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

There were tears from Serena Williams, who had to retire injured after a slip up, and tantrums from a Frenchman who was accused of not trying.

Roger Federer’s return almost didn’t go according to plan, but the Swiss is through after Adrian Mannarino also had to retire injured after a fall with a result of two sets.

Here the PA news agency takes a look at some of the dramatic events on day two of Wimbledon.
