Chandlerville native Edge returns to IC

A Chandlerville native and Illinois College graduate will return to her alma mater on Saturday for an opera performance as part of IC’s Fine Arts Series.

After completing the IC in the class of 2011, Mathilde Kante, a lyric-dramatic soprano, received her master’s degree in vocal performance from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. She has served on the faculty of Indiana State University and the University of Northern Colorado.

“She took a tenure track apprenticeship in Colorado,” said Garrett Allman, a board member who organizes the series. “She was there for a year and got into the opera program at Lyric (Opera of Chicago), so she left the teaching position in Colorado and went to Lyric, which is a good move for an artist.”

Edge is now completing her third and final year in the young artist program at Lyric’s Ryan Opera Center and will join the faculty at Oberlin College and Conservatory in Ohio this fall.

“She’s had a very successful career and is a graduate student,” Allman said of Edge’s eligibility for the Fine Arts Series program. “You can’t beat that.”

Allman was in the audience in Chicago on April 1 when Edge performed with the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus, he said.

“She’s a wonderful singer,” he said.

Lyric “is a very prestigious program for up-and-coming young opera stars,” he said. “Many of their graduates have great careers afterwards.”

Before Edge leaves Lyric and goes to Oberlin, she will stop at IC’s Rammelkamp Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Saturday to hear a program of music in German and English, Allman said.

“This is their first full concert appearance here,” he said. “She’s come back a few times just to sing for students, do a master class, sing a few pieces. This is the first public performance (in the IC) since her graduation.”

Allman expects Edge – who will be joined on Saturday by pianist Joseph Welch, a music professor at Blackburn College who wrote that school’s curriculum for its new Bachelor of Arts in Music – to go far, he said.

“She came here for college,” he said. “It was obvious from the start that her voice was exceptional. We gave her the best possible education and encouraged her to continue her singing studies at Indiana (University), which she did. Now (her dreams for her career) are coming true.”

Mathilda Edge will perform in concert with Joseph Welch at Illinois College’s Rammelkamp Chapel on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, which are $15 for adults and free for students of all ages, are available at the door.
