Make money betting war like the goddess in the bowl of flowers

Some of North America’s most talented long-distance turfhorses will compete in the $600,000, Grade 2 Flower Bowl Stakes over 1 3/8 miles at the Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, including the Divisional President herself, #4 War like a goddess.

There are no certainties in horse racing, but War Like Goddess looks close to a surefire winner in the Flower Bowl, which offers a ‘Win and You’re In’ place to Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup filly and Mare Turf Keeneland this fall.

War Like Goddess was North America’s top-ranked long-distance turfhorse in 2021 when she counted the Flower Bowl (then a Grade 1) among her four Graded Stakes wins. The daughter of 2007 Champion Turf males English Channel finished the year a close third behind Japanese star Loves Only You in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, where War Like Goddess was beaten just half a length after taking the middle distance.

But as good as War Like Goddess was last year, it could be even better this season. She kicked off her campaign with an impressive win at the Grade 3 Bewitch Stakes in Keeneland, dominating traffic and amassing at an incredibly slow pace to comfortably win by 1 3/4 lengths. Then War Like Goddess tackled the Grade 2 Glens Fall Stakes in Saratoga and again rallied from behind at a slow pace to score by easy 1 1/4 lengths.

The fact that War Like Goddess has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to overcome awkward tempo settings and win decisively is a testament to their talent. Terrific acceleration down the stretch is her greatest weapon, but she’s also shown a little more tactical speed this season under the tutelage of jockey Joel Rosario. If War Like Goddess can trip flawlessly while aiming for a repeat win in the Flower Bowl, victory should be all but certain.

This of course makes it difficult for bettors hoping for a big payout in the Flower Bowl, as War Like Goddess inevitably starts at a low price point and it’s not worth betting to win. Instead, if we want to get a decent return on investment, we need to make it big with exotic bets like trifecta and superfecta.

So who should we use under War Like Goddess? #6 Temple City Terror and #3 Virginia Delight are logical choices after finishing second and third behind War Like Goddess at Glens Falls. Of the two, we prefer Virginia Joy, who had Grade 3 The Very One Stakes and Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay Stakes wins earlier this year. Virginia Joy spent much of Glens Falls in inside traffic and was unable to make the most of her tactical speed. She led from start to finish, dominating Sheepshead Bay by 14 1/4 lengths and is improving with a lighthearted drive in the Flower Bowl.

Temple City Terror’s credentials are also solid. She got into the slow pace of Glens Falls well and three starts back she unleashed a last-to-first rally to win the 1 1/2 mile kertana stakes at Churchill Downs for the second straight year. Temple City Terror is an effective long distance turf mare with the talent to compete at this level.

We will also support #1 Capital Structure, who recently broke a pedestrian pace to collect himself and win a 1 3/8 mile race in Saratoga by two lengths. Conditioned by top turf coach Chad Brown, Capital Structure finished just a half-length behind Virginia Joy in spring 2021 in a claim to an optional Belmont Park allowance and still has room for improvement while racing for only the third time this year .

Depending on how big your budget is for betting on the Flower Bowl, we’ve outlined two betting strategies for you to consider. One focuses solely on the trifecta, while the other adds a superfecta to the mix.

Betting strategy on a $10 budget

$5 Trifecta: 4 by 3 by 1.6 ($10)

What to say on the betting window: Saratoga, 10thth Race, $5 trifecta 4 with 3 with 1.6

Betting Strategy on a $30 Budget

$10 Trifecta: 4 by 3 by 1.6 ($20)

What to say on the betting window: Saratoga, 10thth Race, $10 Trifecta 4 w/3 w/1.6

$2.50 superfecta: 4 by 3 by 1.6 by 1.6 ($10)

What to say on the betting window: Saratoga, 10thth Race, $2.50 superfecta 4 with 3 with 1.6 with 1.6

Good luck and have fun racing!
