“The Kingsmen”, “The King’s Man” and three spy-worthy watches from Bremont, TAG Heuer and Jaeger-LeCoultre

Fans of Marvel comics and Kingsman movie series are already jumping in anticipation of the new Hollywood movie The King’s Man due in the US on December 22, 2021. It’s the third installment of the King man Film series based on the comic series by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar The secret service.

“The King’s Man”

The King’s Man should originally be released in November 2019, but has been postponed at least four times due to the pandemic and will finally land on this Christmas-friendly release date. Europeans won’t be able to see the film until early January.

In honor of the next part of this highly entertaining film series, which is finally coming out, we take a look at the clocks that were made for each of the three films – three clocks that are so different as if they came from Marvel’s multiverse!

And they announced a very interesting debut: e-shop-enabled product placement as all the watches from these films were exclusively available from Mr. Porter. Back then it was still a new concept, today it is relatively ubiquitous.

Kingsman: The Secret Service / Bremont (2015)

England’s most popular watchmaking duo – brothers Nick and Giles English, founders of Bremont – were so deeply involved with Kingsman: The Secret Service that Nick English even had a little cameo.

Directed and adapted by Matthew Vaughn, Kingsman: The Secret Service starred Colin Firth as Harry Hart and Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Caine in other leading roles. Kingsman: The Secret Service is a thriller about an ultra-secret and very well-dressed British spy organization who recruits a promising street kid (Taron Egerton) while the agency gets into a life-and-death battle with a wealthy megalomaniac who is threatened by global catastrophe (Samuel L. Jackson Richmond Valentine).

The film also featured several British luxury brands, including Bremont, supplying the wrist technology that played an important role as a James Bond spy device.

The budding spies wear stealthy black, slightly modified Bremont ALT1-B models on NATO straps known as the Kingsman Special Edition DLC, including the film’s lead actress, Taron Egerton (Eggsy). Upon graduation, trainees received rose gold Bremont Kingsman Special Edition Rose Golds, while The Kingsman Stainless Steel model is worn by Merlin (Mark Strong), the trainer of the young super spies. These watches were introduced to the public on Mr. Porter just before the film hit theaters in early 2015.

The clocks were tool instruments for the agents and played roles in the film. Director Vaughn made a deliberate choice of props for this film, saying, “Royals are primarily British, which made Bremont watches the perfect fit. Not only does Bremont make fantastic mechanical watches, but they also have links with the military and their special forces around the world, making them perfect timepieces for the modern day spy. “

Nick English was delighted with Bremont’s choice. “And it was wonderful to see how active Matthew was [Vaughn] was throughout the process. We pride ourselves on making durable mechanical chronometers in Henley-on-Thames and so the whole British connection is spot on, ”he said at the time. “We pride ourselves on the work we produce for the military, so the connection is very relevant.”

Kingsman: The Golden Circle / TAG Heuer (2017)

For the continuation of 2017 Kingsman: The Golden Circle, the Bremont watches have been replaced by models from TAG Heuer, including a special version of the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45.

In this sequel, the British Kingsman agents wore the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45, while the American Statesman agents wore the legendary Monaco Caliber 11.

The unique features of this version of the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 include rose gold lugs, a brown leather strap with “Kingsman” embossing and an orange velvet strap inspired by a tuxedo that Egerton wore in the film and including “Kingsman” dial functions Kingsman label and logo at 9 and 3 o’clock; at 10:10 am the dial vibrates for 10 seconds and the “K” logo appears; and the original Android Wear lighting feature is replaced by the film’s logo on the dial in gold against a white background.

According to a TAG Heuer press release, Vaughn’s Connected Watch was personally chosen as the timepiece for his Kingsman agents in the second film. It was worn by the main character Eggsy (Taron Egerton).

Many of the other characters wore the TAG Heuer Monaco, including Halle Berry (Monaco Lady Kingsman) and Channing Tatum (caliber 11), as seen in the photo above.

The King’s Man / Jaeger-LeCoultre (2021)

The stylish kingsmen need watches that match their tailor-made outfit, and for many experts the bulky connected watch wasn’t quite the right thing, even if the TAG Heuer Monaco Caliber 11 was a good choice for the American agents.

For those coming very soon The King’s Man the watchmaker’s role is taken over by Jaeger-LeCoultrewho created an extraordinary watch for the occasion.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Kingsman Knife Watch on a well-cut wrist

Jaeger-LeCoultre delves into its brand history and transforms a pocket watch design from its rich past into a wristwatch. This was very apt as the 1907 pocket watch in question has the nickname Couteau, Knife in French, as a reference to its wafer-thin edge.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Couteau pocket watch from 1907

This almost non-existent style is made possible by an ultra-thin movement from Edmond Jaeger. Before joining forces with Jacques-David LeCoultre, he developed some movements for Cartier, among others, that he should make Couteau Pocket watches. You could say that this was one of his specialty areas.

Fast forward to the current day and the realization that turning a pocket watch into a wristwatch is not easy. However, the Master Ultra Thin Kingsman Knife Watch is a benchmark for how to do this well.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has actually succeeded in transferring the wafer-thin profile of the pocket watch to a wristwatch. In contrast to any other (ultra-thin) watch, the discreetly stepped case allows the watch to rest on the wrist.

With a height of 4.25 mm it is slim, but not the thinnest watch on the market – it is not even the narrowest watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre (this honor goes to the Master Ultra Thin Squelette from 2015 with 3.6 mm) . Brands like Piaget and Bulgari may regularly produce thinner watches than Jaeger-LeCoultre, but the Master Ultra Thin Kingsman Knife Watch looks slimmer on the wrist than it actually is.

It is the razor sharp design that accomplishes this.

Jaeger-LeCoultre knew very well what it was doing when its designers were working on this watch. They cleverly kept the crown at 12 o’clock, including the gold ring on which you would normally hang a chain on a pocket watch. By cutting the interesting component, which, by the way, also protects the crown, into the bracelet, they created a bizarre detail that makes the watch interesting without alienating it.

Fortunately, Jaeger-LeCoultre decided to update the design of the dial to give it a clean look with blued sword-shaped hands. That hits exactly the right note, because the watch looks contemporary and yet based on old values, perfectly in the style of The king man Universe and that of many other modern, sophisticated gentlemen.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master ultra-thin Kingsman knife watch

The Master Ultra Thin Kingsman Knife Watch also marks the return of the caliber 849. This hand-wound movement and its direct predecessor, the caliber 839, were in the Jaeger-LeCoultre catalog for around four decades. With a height of only 1.85 mm, it is best known as the drive for the Master Ultra Thin collection from Jaeger-LeCoultre.

The case construction of the Master Ultra Thin Kingsman Knife Watch is very different in that it is 1.65mm thinner than the 5.9mm thickness of the movement used in the current Master Ultra Thin line, caliber 896.

Caliber 849 has a reputation for being precise and sturdy, fairly manageable given the very active lifestyle of a Kingsman, and something that unfortunately we can’t say about every ultra-thin movement. It’s a pleasure to see them again in the Master Ultra Thin Kingsman Knife Watch – even if the designers saved it from prying eyes by giving this timepiece a closed caseback.

Don’t miss the lead role of Jaeger-LeCoultre in The King’s Man, soon to a Cinema near you. And if you haven’t already, me highly recommended to look at Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, both of which provide great entertainment despite (or in my opinion because of) the comic book and watchmaker connections.
