Thompson sworn in as 13th Superintendent of the RRGSD

Julie Thompson was sworn in as the thirteenth superintendent of the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Tuesday night.

Halifax County Judge Turner Stephenson took the oath of office while her son, Alex, held the family Bible.

Thompson joined the RRGSD in August 2008 as an English teacher, a position she held until July 2015.

She later served as associate principal of Roanoke Rapids High School, primary residence and collaborative local literacy design coach at Chaloner Middle School, and Chief Academic Officer of RRGSD from 2017-2021.

She was also a member of the Northeastern Leadership Academy Principal Preparation Program Cohort from 2014-2016 at North Carolina State University and is the first graduate of that program to become a superintendent.

After the ceremony, Thompson thanked her family and the community for their support in this new role.

She is currently working on her PhD in Education Policy, Planning and Leadership in K-12 Administration at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg.

She is expected to complete her doctorate in May 2023.
